Lead singer Ian Kenny, bassist Jon Stockman, guitarist Andrew 'Drew' Goddard, drummer Steve Judd and guitarist Mark Hosking combine their eclectic talents to develop a sound all Karnivool's own. 'Themata,' their 2005 debut album, was instantly a chart-topping hit in Australia. Not only did the public react and reinforce, but so did critics. Karnivool - Themata review. Album Rating: 5.0 Awesome review!! Themata is such a great album, the guys have some great musical talent, especially when you consider that Drew, the guitarist, also played drums on the entire album (bar 'Lifelike') aswell as guitar. I believe it's Mark Hosking, one of Karnivool's guitarists, who also has an amazing voice. But Kenny does all the lead vocals in Themata. So 'Sleeping Satellite,' while an amazing rare song, is not exactly what you hear on Themata (plus it's a cover. What you hear on Themata is pure creative genius). Themata is even better. Sound Awake is the second studio album by Australian progressive rock band Karnivool, released in Australia on 5 June 2009. At the J Awards of 2009, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year.[1]
At the 2010 West Australian Music Industry Awards, the album won Most Popular Album.
Album background[edit]
The album follows a four-year gap since their debut studio album Themata in 2005.Sound Awake was produced by Forrester Savell (The Butterfly Effect, Dallas Frasca) and recorded at Perth's Blackbird and Kingdom Studios over several months. It was later mixed at Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios and mastered by Tom Coyne (DJ Shadow, The Roots) at Sterling Sounds in New York City.
In an interview bassist Jon Stockman describes the differences between the band's two albums.
The main difference would be that the bulk of Themata was written by Drew and arranged by a few of us whereas both the writing and arranging for Sound Awake was much more of a collaborative effort from everyone. In addition to that, a lot of Themata was written straight to a recording session before ever being played as a band, whereas we pretty much wrote most of the Sound Awake in a jam-room environment.
The name of the album was conceived by Drew Goddard and the album cover artwork was undertaken by graphic designers, Joe Kapiteyn and Chris Frey.
We originally wanted a foldout design but found that the standard book worked better with the number of artwork pictures that we had in mind. In the end, the final cover was a mixture of input from all the band and Joe.

The album was released on 5 June 2009 through Cymatic Records and distributed by Sony Music Australia. The first single from the album, 'Set Fire to the Hive', was released prior to it, on 28 April 2009, with a video being released on 8 May. The second single, 'All I Know', was released on 9 November 2009, along with an accompanying music video.
Sound Awake was played as the 'feature album' on radio station Triple J.[3] They played the entire album, one song per day, with some songs featuring short spoken introductions by members of the band. On 17 July 2009 it was nominated for a J Award – 'Australian Album of the Year'.[4]

Sound Awake received a largely positive reaction from music critics. Adam Greenberg of Allmusic wrote that Sound Awake expanded Karnivool's musical scope beyond the alternative metal sound of Themata. He cited similarities in the musicality of the album to the work of contemporaries such as Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, but felt that often the band's exploration of progressive metal sounded too similar to the work of Tool.[5] Darren Sadler of Rock Sound summarised Sound Awake as 'an album of immense progressive proportions that boasts some brilliant atmospherics, excellent melodies courtesy of vocalist Ian Kenny, accomplished musicianship and adventurous songwriting', singling 'Deadman' and 'Change' out as the album's highlights.[9] Jacob Royal of Sputnikmusic complimented Karnivool's experimentation and musicianship, writing that many of the tracks build in dynamics well and feature complex percussive arrangements from drummer Steve Judd. He considered 'Illumine' and 'Simple Boy' among the weakest points of the album, but praised most of the other featured songs.[10] drr00t of Melodic considered the album a 'masterpiece', directing praise at the performances of Judd and bassist Jon Stockman, and writing that 'the instrumentation on this album is nothing short of complex, but the band still stays true to its melodies and fit the two together seamlessly'.[8] Jonathan Barkan of Bloody Disgusting compared Sound Awake to the work of Tool, Porcupine Tree, Muse and The Mars Volta, 'while still being able to sound original and unique'.[6]

Karnivool Themata Blogspot 2017
Come December, and these progressive musicians from Australia are going to take Bombay by storm with their uniqueness!
All you music freaks in the house, why so sewn and silent? Come on make some noise!
They say if a bird poops on you it is good luck, but this coming December the amount of progressive stuff Karnivool is going to drop on everyone in India cannot be measured. The moment I first heard Themata I wasn’t a simple boy anymore, in fact a whole new galaxy opened up. I was forced to walk through an alley of progression, that turning back from there was not an option. Boy, did I feel l1fel1ke or what!
Post-Themata came Sound Awake, in 2009. Fuck your definition of music, when I poured Karnivool‘s second full-length into my ears it sucked me in. I got trapped in a rubik’s cube and there was no way out. Music aimed at making even the extra terrestrial beings meditate, Sound Awake stalked me enough to be at one with myself.
Watching Karnivool play their tracks live, with Ian Kenny‘s vocals that give me a boner, eliminates the need to ponder over things that are insignificant. If you believe in a higher power then you definitely need to be present at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on the 18th of December. Karnivool are not only way above the higher powerless shit, they are visible too. Oh! Now you got it. IIT Bombay has set a benchmark in getting down bands that need to be here. Hitting the bull’s eye, yea baby. Be there!
I haven’t missed this event for the last five years (except for Porcupine Tree) but unfortunately I might be fucking off to UK before this humongous event happens. Unlucky is a small word to explain what point my mind is trying to drive home. If not here, I will catch them somewhere, sometime but I just hope destiny sets up my appointment with Karnivool on the day in question here. After all a standard deck has fifty two cards for a reason.
The rest of you are closing in on that feeling of a spacecraft that will take y’all to a place you’ve never visited. You are not even required to eat roquefort before attending the gig, you can enter the venue anyways. Now that’s a bonus! Adventure is in store. For all I know, you might even go through a metamorphosis after the concert, a change as they call it, unless of course you don’t allow that to happen. Just let yourself go.
Never heard Karnivool? And don’t have the time to? Make sure you at least learn the lyrics for the track New Day so you can sing along with them. You’re welcome.
Witness how your soul illumines itself and interacts with music, from a band that probably no body can not like. For the record, I will forever be indebted to Karnivool‘s brand of progressive rock.
